Expect most of the effort to happen before the final colour. Cracks, moisture, contamination, unevenness and previous coatings must be addressed; then primer and build coats are selected for the substrate. Final sheen should be reviewed under actual lighting.

Theoretical spreading rate is governed by volume solids and target DFT; practical consumption increases with roughness, loss and application method
For condensation-sensitive coating, substrate temperature must remain safely above dew point according to the coating manufacturer

Primer is not a universal undercoat. Porous mineral surfaces, previously painted walls, timber and ferrous/non-ferrous metals can require different preparation and primer chemistry.
Uniform appearance depends on film continuity, wet-edge control, consistent roller/brush technique, lighting and batch/colour control. Touch-up can flash differently from the original coat if sheen, absorption or application method differs.
